Staying Cool in the Fall

October 3, 2024

As the new school year starts, it's important to remember warm temperatures can still cause a risk to your health and well-being.

Here are some tips for staying hydrated and cool during the early fall, especially if you're playing sports, in physical education (PE) class or just being active outside.

Stay Hydrated!

  • Always Carry a Water Bottle: Bring a reusable water bottle to school. Refill it throughout the day. Try to drink at least 8 to 10 cups of water every day.
  • Drink Water Before, During and After Exercise: When you are playing sports or in PE class, drink a cup of water every 15 to 20 minutes during exercise.

Stay Cool!

  • Wear the Right Clothing: Choose lightweight, loose-fitting and light-colored clothing. This will help you keep cool. Cotton and linen are great fabric choices.
  • Use Sun Protection: Put on sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. Plus wear a hat and use sunglasses to protect against ultraviolet rays.
  • Seek Shade or Cool Areas: To avoid getting too hot, students should stay in shaded or air-conditioned places.

Stay Healthy!

  • Know the Signs of Getting Overheated: Be aware of signs such as lots of sweating, dizziness and cramps. If you feel these symptoms, move to a cool place, drink water and rest.
  • Eat Healthy Snacks: Eat snacks with lots of water in them. Fruits and vegetables such as watermelon, cucumbers and oranges can help.
  • Schedule Water Breaks: Take regular water breaks during sports practices and PE classes. Especially when it’s 90 degrees or hotter.

By doing these things, you’ll be able to enjoy school and outdoor activities this fall, even when it's warm out!
